How to Alter the Neckline of a Shirt: Square Neck Edition

One of the most common alterations that many people look to make on their shirts is adjusting the neckline. Whether it’s due to a change in body shape, a personal style preference, or simply because the original neckline no longer fits well, altering the neckline of a shirt can be a game-changer. In this article, we will focus on how to alter the neckline of a shirt with a square neck, ensuring that it fits perfectly and flatters your figure.

Before you begin, gather all the necessary materials. You will need a square neck shirt, fabric scissors, pins, a ruler, a fabric marker, and your preferred sewing thread and needle. It’s also a good idea to have a sewing machine ready, although hand-sewing can work just as well.

Step 1: Measure the Current Neckline

Start by measuring the current neckline of your shirt. This will help you determine how much you need to take in or let out. Use a soft measuring tape to measure the circumference of the neckline at its widest point. Write down this measurement for later reference.

Step 2: Decide on the New Neckline Size

Based on your personal preference and the fit of the shirt, decide on the new neckline size. If you want a more fitted look, go for a smaller size. If you prefer a looser fit, opt for a larger size. Make sure to consider the style of the shirt and your body type when making this decision.

Step 3: Mark the New Neckline

Using your fabric marker, mark the new neckline on the shirt. If you’re going for a smaller size, draw a smaller circle or a V-neck shape. For a larger size, draw a larger circle or a deeper V-neck. Make sure the marks are even and symmetrical.

Step 4: Cut the Excess Fabric

With your fabric scissors, carefully cut along the marked lines, removing the excess fabric. Be sure to leave a seam allowance of about 1/2 inch (1.27 cm) for the new neckline.

Step 5: Pin and Sew the New Neckline

Pin the cut edges together, right sides facing. Use a ruler to ensure that the edges are even and aligned. Sew the new neckline using a straight stitch, making sure to remove the pins as you go. If you’re using a sewing machine, set the stitch length to a medium length, such as 2.5 mm.

Step 6: Hem the New Neckline

Once the new neckline is sewn, turn the shirt inside out and press the seam flat. Then, fold the seam allowance under and press again. Finally, topstitch the hem to secure it and give the neckline a clean finish.

And there you have it! Your shirt now has a perfectly altered square neckline that fits you like a glove. Not only will this new neckline make your shirt more comfortable and stylish, but it will also give you the confidence to wear it with pride.
